Dark World - The Deck Matchups

Yet another article about the - by now - very well known Dark World Deck! In this one, we'll talk about the deck's matchups. Of course, we won't talk about decks that will be dead after the banlist, but about the ones that will be active at that time! Let's now begin.

The Agents Matchup
Not the best matchup for that deck, but this doesn't mean that it's a guaranteed loss. Cards that let both, you and your opponent discard cards may help the opposing deck fill the graveyard quickly with the proper fairies needed so that Kristya and Hyperion can be Special Summoned. Furthermore, if it's running The Sanctuary in the Sky, it may be easy for it to get over your own Field Spell. On the other hand, getting over Kristya and Hyperion will be rather easy, either by using Grapha's/Adreus' powerful effects, or just by attacking them while your Field Spell is active. Also, DDV would definitely delay them and make their Shine Balls play totally useless!

The Zombies Matchup
During this format, zombies will focus on Xyz Summoning much more than Synchro Summoning. As a result, Steelswarm roahes might block Grapha's way on the field, and Utopias might delay the Dark World player long enough, in order to cost him the game. However, Grapha's effect can make the opponent go minus 2+ (since he needs 2 or more Monsters to conduct an Xyz summon), while in the same time the Dark World player gets pluses! Furthermore, Mystical Space Typhoons, Heavy Storm and Dark World Lightnings will make sure that the opponent's backrow will always be empty, so that all the protection he has will be from his vulnerable monsters!

The Twilight Matchup
In this Matchup, most of the deck's Spell/Trap Destruction-Related Cards will be totally useless, since Twilight decks only run triple Royal Decree, Treacherous Trap Hole or Beckoning Lights. Also, Chaos Sorcerers and Black Luster Soldier might prove to be a huge threat for Grapha, since if he gets removed from play he is completely useless. Last but not least, if cards like Judgment Dragon or Celestia, Lightsworn Angel aren't stopped, the end will be really near for the Dark World Player. The solution? Be fast and aggressive enough, so that you can block your opponent's way to setting up his graveyard properly and special summoning his great monsters!

The Mirror Match!
Do you know what is a Dark World Player's biggest fear? Another Dark World Player! In case you haven't noticed, Dark World Monsters have more than one effect! If they are discarded due to a card effect, they do something, but if they are discarded due to an opponent's card effect, they do something more! This means that the winner of a Dark World Mirror match will be the one to:
a) Notice sooner than the other what his opponent is using (so that he will refrain from activating cards that discard stuff from the opponent's hand).
b) Play in the smarter and most skillful way. Activating massive-discarding cards, such as Morphing Jar or Card Destruction will help the opponent twice more than it will help you!
c) Make clever side deck changes. Remove some cards that will help your opponent gain advantage, and adds cards such as Reign-Beaux, Overlord of Dark World that will act against him!
d) Be luckier. Luck was, is and will always be a major factor in this game!

So that's it about the Deck's most common Matchups, during the next format. Stay tuned until the next article, in which we will talk about how to make a Budget Dark World Deck!
Until then,
-Adreus.
