The dark world deck has a pretty basic engine for every kind of card: Monsters, Spells and Traps. This engine consists of the very basic cards that the deck needs in the exact quantity, in order for it to succeed. Below, we will see all these ‘basic’ cards. Beginning with the monsters.
The Monsters
The monsters used in the basic engine are actually 3 specific monsters, each used 3 times in the deck. The first one is Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World. His effect allows him to destroy a card when discarded from the hand to the graveyard, and he can also be special summoned from the graveyard, just by returning a Dark World monster from your side of the field to your hand. They are effects that not only help on the destruction of the opponent’s resources, but also on having a pretty solid beatstick on your side of the field all the time. The second monster is Snow, Unlight of Dark World. His special ability allows you to bring a Dark World card from your deck to your hand, once he’s discarded from your hand to the graveyard. What’s amazing is that your options aren’t limited to monsters, but also spell cards, like the ones we’re going to talk about below. The third and last, but not least, monster is Broww, Huntsman of Dark World. His effect allows you to draw a card when he is discarded from your hand to the graveyard. Even if that effect doesn’t seem that much of a broken one, we’ll see below some really basic, yet interesting uses of that card in the deck. Having talked about the basic monsters (which are nine), we’ve come up with the following decklist, so far.
Monsters (9):3x Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World3x Snow, Unlight of Dark World3x Broww, Huntsman of Dark World
Let’s now continue with the Spells that the deck needs.
The Spells
The first Spell Card, needed in every single Dark World deck is actually the heart and soul of the whole deck. We’re talking about the card named The Gates of Dark World, which is a field spell able to give you a really important advantage. The card mentioned above is a Field Spell Card (you’ll need to play it at 3) which will allow you to discard a Fiend-Type monster and draw a card, after having removed from your graveyard a Fiend-Type monster. In other words, all you have to do is have a Fiend-Type monster in your graveyard to remove, so that you can unleash your best monsters’ effects and also draw cards at the same time. Even though this can be used only once per turn, there’s a way to change that. And that’s when the second card comes to the surface, Giant Trunade! Since this is a deck in which you’ll need to make sure that in many occasions your opponent won’t show resistance, you’ll definitely need this card to achieve that. But this card’s use is not limited to eliminating your opponent’s back-row. It can also bounce your own cards back to your hand, so that they can be used again. Yeap, we’re talking about the Field Spell Card, and the play mentioned above! Continuing with the list, we find a really important card, that works like an advanced Mystical Space Typhoon, with terribly good “extra features”. It’s Dark World Lightning and it allows you to destroy a face down card on the field, and then discard a monster from your hand to the graveyard. You can combine this card with monsters like Grapha, and destroy two of your opponent’s cards, with just one of yours! Last but not least, we’ve got Dark World Dealings, a card that will let you and your opponent draw a card and then discard one. Of course, even though your opponent gets the chance to draw a card that might help him, you are the one who takes advantage of both; the one you drew and the one you discarded! These are the basic spell cards you will need for this deck, accompanied, of course, from all the staple spell cards. Specifically, Mystical Space Typhoon, Monster Reborn, Dark Hole. Let’s see how our decklist looks right now:
Monsters (9):3x Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World3x Snow, Unlight of Dark World3x Broww, Huntsman of Dark WorldSpells (13):3x The Gates of Dark World3x Dark World Dealings2x Dark World Lightning2x Mystical Space Typhoon1x Dark Hole1x Monster Reborn1x Giant Trunade
The Traps
For the trap cards of the deck, you won’t be needing anything more than the staple trap cards, which are Solemn Warning, Solemn Judgment, Mirror Force, Torrential Tribute. And now we can have a look at the complete list of the cards that form the Dark World deck engine:
Monsters (9):3x Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World3x Snow, Unlight of Dark World3x Broww, Huntsman of Dark WorldSpells (13):3x The Gates of Dark World3x Dark World Dealings2x Dark World Lightning2x Mystical Space Typhoon1x Dark Hole1x Monster Reborn1x Giant TrunadeTraps (5):2x Solemn Warning1x Solemn Judgment1x Mirror Force1x Torrential Tribute
That is a total of 27 cards. This means that you get to choose what the other 13+ will be. It won’t be an easy procedure of course! Choosing how to build your dark world deck takes time and thought, as there are many different versions of Dark World Decks that can be successfully run. Now, as we have made the ‘skeleton’ of the deck, let’s move on to the ‘flesh’, which means that we will need to think of how the deck is going to work. In the next article you can read about the different versions of the Dark World decks that exist.
